I designed this project to fulfill an assignment for my university's requirements for this semester. The prompt was to create a fictional event, and from said event’s theme and context, create a poster and series of social media posts. I have long dreamt of visiting Oxford, UK, and I have loved the stories of Sherlock Holmes for years. Additionally, I recently read Dr. Carolyn Weber’s “Surprised by Oxford”, so this project’s theme was quickly settled. I felt this project required traditional fonts and elements, and a layout of symmetry to add an air of sophistication. My natural preference leans on the “old-fashioned”, and this project flowed out of inspired images of candlelit corners, cobblestoned alleys, and broody toned Victorian bouquets of flowers. Romance and melancholy seem to color that period of history, and these artworks were diffused from those beginning aesthetics.
